It occurred to me this morning that we hit the two month mark yesterday! THAT’S RIGHT! THE HUNTING MOON HITS STORES IN ONLY TWO MONTHS!
Ahem. I felt like that was a worthy reason for an email update. 😇

1. From the Writing Cave
I was hard at work on Witchlight for a solid 5 weeks, but I felt things getting…well, sticky. It’s not that I’m stuck—I actually have a very clear vision of the events currently unfolding since they are THE cookie(s) I’ve been working toward since I started the series over a decade ago.
But I was starting to lose the emotional connection to my characters. Their voices were fading. I wasn’t feeling the AAAH! COOKIES! joy that I should have been feeling for these scenes.
And that’s always a sign I need to take a break.
So I stepped away from Witchlight on Monday and dove back into the third Luminaries book. Which is going great! I had 40,000 words already written, but I’d felt the stickiness rising back in July. But the time away working on Witchlight has helped my subconscious clarify a few story troubles.
I can now easily see where I went wrong, so I’m chugging forward again.
It’s a lovely feeling, actually. To feel frustrated over here, then move over there and not feel frustrated. It keeps my mental health a lot more even keeled.
Plus, I’ve written >180,000 words in 2023. And that doesn’t include the 45,000 words I’ve written for my Misfits & Daydreamers newsletters!
I know I’ve actually written well over 180,000 words, but 180,000 are the number I’ve “kept” across assorted projects. I am a person who writes a lot, but then often cuts and backtracks as I pursue the Right Story. In other words, I’m pretty sure I’m in the 250,000+ words range this year—but many simply weren’t kept.
Given all the really tough life stuff that has happened to me this year, I’m really proud I’ve managed to write so much! Obviously, that means I’ve done far less on social media…
But I’m of the belief (correct me if I’m wrong?) that readers would rather have more books than more tweets or threads or posts or reels.
Still, I do look forward to a day when life settles a bit and I can be online chatting with all of you more.
