As most of you know, the Luminaries world is divided into seven clansâone for each night of the week, charged with protecting the world against the forestâs nightmares on their respective night.
Our heroine, Winnie Wednesday, is a loyal bear from the Wednesday clan. Read on to learn more!

The Seven Luminary Clans
SUNDAY
Sigil: a white swan
Motto:Â Patience inside. Calm under pressure.
About: Sundays are the natural teachers. They are patient and thrive under intense, nightmarish pressure. They train young Luminaries on their sprawling estate.
Estate:Â "Like the Monday estate, there are multiple annexes around the main mansion, but here, each one is devoted to the training of a Luminary.
Thereâs the library, a vastly truncated version of the two libraries on the Monday estate. Thereâs the massive glass-roofed indoor pool and beside it, a pond made to mimic the lake above the riverâs falls where aquatic nightmares thrive. Beyond that is a small building that leads into the underground hot room. Finally, circling around all of it is the obstacle courseâwhich has grown more intense since Winnie was last here. More columns to dive around, more ladders to scramble up, more tires and mud and marshy pools to race through."
MONDAY
Sigil: a white scroll with a black ribbon for the Mondays
Motto: Intellect at the fore. Knowledge is the path.
About: Mondays are all about intellectual pursuits and preserving history. They are the keepers of the Luminary past, the experts on lore, history, forest science, and nightmares.
Estate:Â "Itâs like a college campus. Or at least what Winnie imagines a college campus might look like, based on what sheâs seen on TV. Ahead is the main building, with its brownstone and crawling ivy thatâs more like rattly spaghetti without its green coat. Then surrounding the original estate are all the annexes, seven in total: three laboratories, two libraries (historical and scientific), a hospital, and an office building for all the Mondays working to expand Luminary knowledge."
TUESDAY
Sigil: a red scorpion.
Motto:Â Strength of body and heart. We hold the line.
About: Tuesdays are the warriors. Even though all clans fight nightmares, there are times that other violence is necessaryâsuch as hunting nightmares that escape the forest, or perhaps most important of all, defending the Luminaries against any Diana attacks.
Estate: Unvisited in book 1, but in the northwestern part of town. ð
WEDNESDAY
Sigil: a black bear
Motto:Â Loyalty through and through. The cause above all else.
About: Wednesdays are the logistics people. Theyâre so committed to the Luminaries and that they devote their lives to keeping it running. They also frequently make up "networkers," which are Luminaries who live in the non-world in order to keep Luminary life running smoothly.
Estate:Â "Winnieâs breath catches as the full expanse of the brick estate appears before her. The tall windows and hedges are so perfectly square, youâd think a Thursday had trimmed them, and over the large double doors hangs the same brown bear that waits in Winnieâs bedroom.
If the Thursday estate is a modern art museum, the Monday estate is a college campus, and the Friday estate is haunted mansion, then the Wednesday estate is Pemberley from Pride and Prejudice."
THURSDAY
Sigil: a silver bell
Motto:Â Preparedness always. Never without a plan.
About: Thursdays pride themselves on preparation and plans. They are the strategists. They're also in charge of PR and making sure that the reality of the Luminaries never reaches the nons.
Estate:Â "Winnie always felt so fancy going to Erica's room on the top floor, passing all the cool tile and tall windows. If the Monday estate feels like a campus, then the Thursday estate is a modern art museum. Set in a low pocket surrounded by hill and forest, retaining ponds thick with lily pads and cattails surround the gray stone.
All the lights are on in the building as Winnie finally reaches the end of the driveway and the full expanse of the estate rises before her. Floodlights beam in front, revealing hedges so perfectly square, only a Thursday could have trimmed them."
FRIDAY
Sigil: a gray sparrow
Motto:Â Integrity in all. Honesty to the end.
About: Though known for honesty and integrity, no one seems to values such virtues anymore. As such, Fridays have been relegated to the side. They are respected as hunters, but not much else. Winnie can't help but wonder why...
Estate:Â "If the Thursday estate is an art museum, then the Friday estate is something out of a horror movie. It is a haunted gothic mansion brought to life, with its sloped, mossy roof, with its three stories and chipped white paint, with its tall, slender windows (two of which are broken and boarded up) and two gargoyles that loom over the eastern and western wings.
Then there is the crowning horror: the burned out tower on the west side. It was round and stately once, according to the black and white photos that peer out from heavy frames on several halls inside. But now it is a charred skeleton, missing a roof, a top floor, and any dignity it might have once possessed."
SATURDAY
Sigil; a golden key
Motto:Â Leadership in deed and word. Persuasion is power.
About: Saturdays are skilled at using their words to get things done, and also at diplomacy and mediation. As such, they are the natural leaders and managers of the Luminaries.
Estate: Unvisited in book 1, but in the southwestern part of town.
