How to support an author if you can't pre-order

We have only two weeks until my cozy horror romance with 90s jokes and squad goals, The Executioners Three, hits stores! 😱 This is not a drill. Only two weeks until you can finally discover what happens to Freddie, Theo, Divya, and the rest of the gang after the Wattpad chapters left ya hanging for almost seven years.¹

If you haven’t yet, now is definitely the time to pre-order TE3—and I’ll share all the places to do that below.

However, I also realize not everyone can pre-order. Times are tough; books cost money; and maybe TE3—or any other book—just isn’t in your budget right now.

No worries: I’m going to dive in to other ways readers and fans can show their support.

How to Support an Author Beyond Pre-orders

I got this questions (thanks Keksmonster!) on a previous

newsletter. And it’s such a great one:

Is there any way to show support [beyond pre-orders] that the publishers notice?

Indeed, there absolutely is.

1. First: add the book to your Goodreads shelf.

Publishers definitely look at adds on GR to gauge reader enthusiasm for a book. More adds = more enthusiasm = more push (possibly) from the publisher to meet demand—or to simply build on the already-accumulating hype.

I cannot overstate how far GR adds can go to help increase a book’s awareness and in-house support!

2. Next, TAG TAG TAG the publisher!

If you post anywhere on social media, tag the author (assuming you’re saying something nice, of course) and then TAG THE PUBLISHER TOO!

This is another way to show the publisher that there’s organic hype building for a book.

For me, I’ve got two publishers: Tor Teen and Daphne Press. So if they have accounts on the social media platforms you’re using, please give them a tag!

3. Request at your local library!

It’s true that plenty of libraries might stock an author’s books simply because the they see demand or the librarians themselves are fans (😘), but it’s safe to assume most libraries aren’t going to get most books on their shelves.

But you can request!

All you have to do is either ask a librarian in person (they often have a short form you can fill out) or check if their online database has such a form available right there in your browser.

4. POST, TALK, SHARE, EVANGELIZE!

Although I posted this last, it’s by far the most important option on the list (and the most impactful).

If you love an author and their books, then:

• Post about those books online

• Recommend the books to your friends and family

• Sign up for author newsletters²

• Give them a follow on social media

• Post fan art or vibe reels or fic

• Go to events! I’ll be headed on US tour in thirteen days!³

BE THE HYPE MACHINE, in other words!

In today’s age of algorithms and online noise, it’s almost impossible to spread the word about a book. Authors are struggling. Publishers are struggling. Even the old means that once guaranteed sales—like radio/podcast interviews or book reviews in fancy newspapers or even TV appearances—are having limited to zero impact.

The only thing people trust anymore for book recommendations and curation is each other, so BE the “each other!” This will absolutely help the authors you love have long, sustainable careers so they can keep giving you the books you love to read!

Again: I know pre-ordering isn’t an option for everyone. And even being online can be a drain.
